What’s In The Utah Fishing Report For Northern Utah?

This portion of the Utah Fishing Report is about Bear Lake - this week, the Bear Lake surface temperature is about  32° F.  The Cisco Beach boat ramp is still accessible, but it is the only boat ramp usable at this time.  The recent wind activity has left the lake largely ice free.  If you plan to take a boat onto the lake, use caution, because ice chunks are floating around and are dangerous.    

No Cisco are running yet.  Fishing for Cutthroat is good in 60 - 80 feet of water.  Use a tube jig tipped with cisco.  Anglers have the best success fishing at Second Point.

Utah Fishing Report - Joes Valley Offers The Best Splake

Utah Fishing Report for Joes Valley. 

Just in case you don’t already know it, Joes Valley stands among the top lakes for best splake fishing. 

Joes Valley is just South of Price, Utah on Route 29 about 18 miles west of Orangeville.  Although fish tend to become sluggish in the winter, Joes Valley is a great place to catch big splake through the ice. 

Splake typically forage on Utah chub, so when fishing for splake in Joes Valley, you will do well to use jigs that look like chubs or use jigs tiped with a chub tail or other minnow.  Standard baits also work well. 

As a bonus, the stream directly below Joes Valley, known as Cottonwood Creek or Straight Canyon will give you the chance to catch browns, rainbows and cutthroat.

This Utah Fishing Report is for Weber River.

Fishing is excellent on the Weber River, Utah.  The river flow is variable below Echo.  For best success, use spinners and flies hares ear, pheasant tail, prince nymphs etc. Down from Stoddard, the water is mostly clear and you’ll have more success fishing for brown trout using spinners. 

Brown trout fishing as well as mountain whitefish between Rockport and Echo Reservoir is red hot right now and this trend should continue until water flow increases.

Utah Fishing Report: Burbot Is An Unwanted Resident In Flaming Gorge Reservoir

This Utah fishing report is all about Burbot: they’re ugly and they’re not wanted in Flaming Gorge, but they’re feeling quite cozy in their new home.

Burbot, a fish angler’s generally consider as a “junkfish” is a freshwater fish related to cod and looks a lot like an eel, with a mouth full of very tenacious teeth.

Take advantage of a bad situation and try fishing for Burbot at Flaming Gorge Reservoir. The fish taste very good and you’ll be helping the lake by fishing out these non native squatters.

Michigan Fishing Report - Southwest Lower Peninsula

It’s Steelhead Time!

Grand River at Grand Rapids - Boat and shore anglers are steelhead fishing. With water levels on the rise, look for the steelhead up near the dam while using choker bags with 7 to 15 eggs. A couple of brown trout were caught. Those fishing off the bridges will want to use spawn just off the bottom. Walleye are being caught on jigs with wax worms or minnows.

Muskegon - Pier anglers have a good chance to catch steelhead with the warm water coming downstream.

Muskegon Lake - Boat anglers are still going out. By day, they are catching pike and steelhead. Those fishing the west end of the lake are taking perch, but some sorting will be necessary. At night, anglers are catching pike and walleye.

White River - Look for steelhead up near Hesperia.

BASTROP: Water clear. Black bass are good on chartreuse and chartreuse/white soft plastics, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits. Crappie are fair on minnows. Channel and blue catfish are very good on stinkbait, chicken livers, and nightcrawlers. Yellow catfish are slow.

BELTON: Water lightly stained; 60 degrees; 0.25’ high. Black bass are good on Rat-L-Traps and Sassy Shad. Hybrid striper are good on minnows, Sassy Shad, and riversides. White bass are good on minnows under lights at night. Crappie are excellent on minnows in 15 feet. Channel and blue catfish are good on hot dogs. Yellow catfish are slow.

BROWNWOOD: Water clear to stained; 60 degrees; 1.58’ low. Black bass are fair on black/blue jigs, crankbaits, and watermelon red and green pumpkin 4” worms over brush piles in 10 – 15 feet. Hybrid striper are slow. White bass are fair on Li’l Fishies and watermelon crankbaits under lighted docks at night. Crappie are good on Li’l Fishies and minnows over brush piles in 10 – 18 feet. Channel catfish are fair on cut bait and shrimp over baited holes in 12 – 20 feet. Yellow catfish are slow.

BUCHANAN: Water clear; 59 degrees; 2.30’ low. Black bass are good on Texas rigged blue flake Scoundrel worms, watermelon red JDC curl tail grubs on jigheads, and suspending blue back Fat Free Shads along ledges and points in 10 – 20 feet. Striped bass are good drifting live shad, and jigging Spoiler Shad swim baits and Pirk Minnows around Garrett Island in 25 – 40 feet. White bass are fair jigging Tiny Traps, Curb’s crappie jigs, and blade baits along main lake points and creek bluffs in 15 – 25 feet. Crappie are slow. Channel catfish are slow. Yellow and blue catfish are slow.

CANYON LAKE: Water gin clear; 62 degrees; 0.05’ high. Black bass are very good on Texas rigged Red Shad JDC drop shot worms, watermelon red Brush Hogs, and tubes on jigheads between fronts in 10 – 15 feet in the stickups and along bluffs. Striped bass are fair jigging Pirk Minnows and trolling Gizz 4’s or Shad Raps on down riggers in the lower end of the lake over humps in 40 – 60 feet. White bass are fair but small on blade baits along main lake bluffs. Smallmouth bass are very good on tomato red JDC grubs, smoke/red flake tubes on jigheads, and smoke drop shot worms along main lake points and bluff ledges. Crappie are slow. Channel catfish are slow. Yellow and blue catfish are slow.

COLEMAN: Water clear; 61 degrees. Black bass are fair on spinnerbaits and crankbaits. Hybrid striper are fair on minnows. Crappie are good on minnows. Channel and blue catfish are good on stinkbait, liver, and frozen shrimp. Yellow catfish are slow.

COLORADO RIVER: (At Colorado Bend State Park) Water murky. Black bass are slow. Striped bass are fair on minnows. White bass are fair on minnows. Crappie are slow. Catfish are fair on nightcrawlers, stinkbait, and shrimp in deep holes.

FAYETTE: Water fairly clear; 65 degrees. Black bass are fair on electric blue Carolina rigged Finesse worms in 10 – 18 feet, and on spinnerbaits along the outside edges of grass. Channel and blue catfish are excellent on stinkbait and shrimp over baited holes in 14 – 18 feet.

GRANBURY: Water clear; 1.31’ low. Black bass are fair on watermelon red and pumpkinseed soft plastics. Striped bass are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are fair on minnows and blue tube jigs. Catfish are good on shrimp, stinkbait, and live minnows.

GRANGER: Water murky; 55 degrees; 0.29’ high. Black bass are slow. White bass are fair upriver among shad. Crappie are slow. Blue catfish are good on juglines baited with shad and cut bait. Yellow catfish are slow.

LBJ: Water stained; 60 degrees; 0.12’ low. Black bass are good on pumpkin JDC drop shot worms, PBJ colored Snag Proof jigs, and green pumpkin tubes on docks and seawalls. Striped bass are slow. White bass are fair to good on silver Pirk Minnows and Spoiler Shads in the channel around the power plant. Crappie are fair on minnows in brush piles under heated docks. Channel catfish are fair on minnows and worms. Yellow and blue catfish are slow.

NAVARRO MILLS: Water stained; 62 degrees; 0.85’ low. Black bass are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are slow. Channel and blue catfish are slow. Yellow catfish are slow.

PROCTOR: Water clear; 60 degrees; 0.15’ low. Black bass are good on black/purple and chartreuse soft plastic worms and crankbaits. Striped bass are slow. White bass are good but small on minnows, small Rat-L-Traps, and roadrunners. Crappie are good on minnows and chartreuse tube jigs. Channel and blue catfish are good on juglines baited with cut shad. Yellow catfish are slow.

SOMERVILLE: Water murky; 0.11’ high. Black bass are slow. Hybrid striper are slow. White bass are slow. Crappie are slow. Channel and blue catfish are good on juglines baited with cut shad and perch. Yellow catfish are slow.

STILLHOUSE: Water clear; 67 degrees; 0.20’ high. Black bass are fair on watermelon, watermelon green, and pumpkinseed soft plastic worms, and on minnows. White bass are slow. Crappie are excellent on minnows. Channel and blue catfish are slow. Yellow catfish are slow.

TRAVIS: Water clear; 67 degrees; 0.62’ low. Black bass to 6 pounds are good on chrome crankbaits, black worms, and brown jigs in 14 – 30 feet. Striped bass are slow. White bass are fair on silver jigging spoons and minnows in 25 – 40 feet. Crappie are fair on minnows and blue and white tube jigs in 15 – 25 feet. Channel and blue catfish are fair on nightcrawlers and cut shad in 28 – 40 feet. Yellow catfish are slow.

WALTER E. LONG: Water clear; 63 degrees. Black bass are slow. Hybrid striper are fair on minnows and worms. White bass are fair on minnows and worms. Crappie are fair on minnows. Channel and blue catfish are slow. Yellow catfish are slow.
