Fishing Report For Strawberry Reservoir Utah Easter Weekend

Fishing on Strawberry Reservoir is excellent if you use a few of these unique strategies. 

First, a word on the snow conditions.  Utah is having a banner snow year.  The ridges around the lake currently have well over 10 feet of snow despite the warming temperatures.  The lake itself  only has a few inches of snow because as the snow falls on the lake, it freezes into the ice itself.  Lake ice thickness is about 24 inches.

The road to the marina parking area is plowed and clear.  Conditions are excellent.

For best success fishing through the ice any of the following:  dead minnows with or without a jig; white glow or chartreuse florescent gitzit jigs tipped with a meal worm or a piece of shrimp (yes, the kind you buy at the grocery store).  Depth doesn’t not seem to be a real factor in where the fish are, but you should avoid the crowds when possible.  Keep your hand on your pole because the fish do not hit hard and you need to be able to feel it when they hit your line so you can hook them successfully.

Snowmobiling conditions are fantastic in the Strawberry Valley.  The trails are all groomed and wide open play areas are abundant.

(Feb 14) Snowmobiles have been a preferred method on many parts of the reservoir but please use caution, especially with 4-wheelers because slush conditions can change and can be a problem for these vehicles. A lot of snow on the surface (over 20 inches) and several inches of slush between the ice and snow. Ice is generally over 14 inches thick. Fishing success ranges from spotty to very good—move or change techniques if fishing is slow. Most anglers are using small- to medium-size jigs or plain bait. Plowing is occurring at Chicken Creek East, the ladders area and at Strawberry Marina. UDOT is plowing some pulloffs as well. Please reconsider going up to fish on snowy days because the plows can’t plow too well with vehicles in the way. Vehicles can’t drive on the West side of the reservoir beyond the turnoff to the Strawberry Marina.

This ice is on Strawberry, the snow is deep and the fish are biting!  Without a doubt, Strawberry Reservoir, Utah offers some of the greatest ice fishing action known to man.  Many anglers are catching trout over 27″ through the ice.  Due to recent heavy snow storms the snow is deep on the ice so come prepared to encounter some slush.  Ice on the lake is over 6 inches and success is great, especially if you move away from the heavily fished areas.  Use a small jig, preferably white or try using a glowing Gitzit for some serious action!  fish off the bottom only a couple of feet, then jig. 

When you catch your limit, but aren’t ready to go, dig into to the deep virgin powder snowmobile fun.  Nothing beats the Strawberry Valley when it comes to snowmobiling.  Bring your own sled or rent one for a couple of hours at the Marina.  And mention “Greg or Suzi” and get a 25% discount at the lodge Monday through Thursday when you call 435-548-2500 for a reservation.

Lake Mead Nevada Fishing Report

LAKE MEAD Trout anglers have found good action for stocked rainbows near the Hemenway fishing pier, or at least where it supposed to be. Trout fishing has also been good at B-5 Road in the days following the trout plants. Striped bass are still hitting slow in the Hemenway and B-F road with occasional reports that a good fish has been caught. Such is the case with a 10-pound 8-ounce striper reeled in by a lucky boater. Anglers are still finding shad and stripers in the Vegas Wash area though most are in the one- to three-pound category.

Fishing on Strawberry is unbelievable!  2 days ago, we pitched our ice tent just out from the marina launch ramp,  and we fished using white florescent ‘gitzits’.  We couldn’t keep the fish off our hooks.  We caught over 100 trout between us (we released all but our limits).  We will be heading back up next week for more fun.  The temps are cold enough to keep the slush under control so walking to our holes was manageable.  It didn’t matter where we drilled our holes.  It didn’t matter how deep we fished.  We still nailed them.  The ice on Strawberry is about 7 inches thick where we were.
